Outlook password prompts. Stored credentials in Control Panel ends with ":PUT"

Hello,

We have Exchange 2010 setup in a resource forest environment with linked mailboxes are being provisioning other AD forests using FIM.

I have been working with multiple mailbox users on Outlook password prompts issues for a few months now. Most of the mailbox users are having no issues.  Some users get prompted for password while login into Outlook while some other gets intermittent password prompts. There could be multiple reasons for this and I have been able to resolve this issue in different ways for different users. We also opened a primier case with few months back, worked for a few months with the affected users, did a number of tests, collected various logs etc. The incident was escalated to highest level and finally it was recommended to remove stored credentials and recreate profile which is actually basic troubleshooting and it worked. Root cause was never identified.

Back to my question, we still get some complaints on paswword prompts mostly when a user has changed linked AD account password; sometime a user didn't change password but started getting prompts just after login into Outlook. In some cases, Outlook continues to send/receive mails, while status bar shows need password. We have tried this by removing any shared mailboxes within that profile. Outlook in safemode won't prompt for password though. There are different patterns and different resolutions for problem. One of them is explained below which looks like bug.

Most of our users are on Outlook 2010 with Windows 7 (also some combination of Outlook 2007 and Windows XP). When we launch Credential Manager in Control Panel, there are some strange entries under Generic Credential the looks like "MS.Outlook:user@casarray.domain.com:PUT". If we delete the credentials that end with ":PUT", the password prompt goes away.

I have done a lot of search, but there is no information on Microsoft site on from where ":PUT" gets added, how this occurs, if this is an Outlook or OS issue, this looks like bug for a while but no hotfix available (or know to me atleast). We have many thousands mailbox users in our environment and anyone may come across this problem. It is not pratical to delete these strange credentials for every single user manually. Their should be at least a hotfix for this problem.

Does Microsoft really care about user frustations who are using their products?

Can anyone help me with a permanent solution for this in the enterprise?

Sorry if I sound rude...

Best Regards,

Rajdeep Sen
