Outlook 2010, Windows 7 & Instant Search

Dear Experts,

In the process of Deploying Windows 7 & Office 2010 we encountered a problem with the Indexing of Outlook in Windows 7.
It looks like Windows 7 search does not recognize the Outlook 2010 edition.

Outlook will complain with the following message:

"Instant Search is not available when Outlook is running with administrator permissions. To use instant search, exit and restart outlook without administrator permissions"

Facts:

  • Outlook is NOT running with administrator permissions
  • In the Indexing options of Windows 7 search Outlook does not show as an index location nor can it be added.
  • We are seeing this on all our test machines running Windows 7 and Outlook 2010
  • Office 2010 is a fresh install. Not an upgrade
  • The Outlook clients are running in cached mode.
  • Windows Search is enabled as a feature in Windows 7
  • The knowledge base : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976786 does NOT solve the problem.
  • In Outlook, when going to the search options, the button "Indexing options" is greyed out.
  • No Outlook2010 GPO's are active at the moment.
  • Outlook 2010 suggests to update the Windows Search to version 4.0 : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=BC28ED7F-C51B-49CD-B505-95B91B453284&displaylang=en
This update is not applicable for Windows 7 however.

This issue might be a showstopper for our computer replacement. We might need to decide to deploy Office 2007 instead.

Is anyone else seeing this? Any thoughts on how this can be solved?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
