The server is unavailable

Hello everybody!  I'm a field tech in a large environment where most of the computers are multi-user workstations.  We've been running Outlook 2010 for several months now since switching from Groupwise.  About a month ago, something happened (it's still unclear to us what), and now nearly all users are having trouble opening Outlook.  When trying to open, it hangs for a few minutes, and then gives the error, "The server is unavailable."  These were all workstations that previously functioned normally.  At this point, the only way we've been able to fix this is to delete the Outlook profile through Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles.  Then when attempting to launch Outlook again, it recreates a new profile, automatically connects to the server and fills in the user's credentials, and opens normally from then on.  This is ok for our single-user workstations, but the problem is, we have perhaps 1000 computers that are used by several thousand different employees, and we're having to run a script for each computer to delete the mail profile.  The problem there is that this resets all customizations, shared calendars and mailboxes, etc.

Does anyone have a better way to fix this than deleting the mail profiles one by one?  Our Exchange team has been of very little help with resolving this and seem unable to explain what exactly went wrong except to say that they rebuilt the Exchange server, but gave it the same name.
