Outlook stops synchronizing after several hours of idle time

I noticed with two computers that Outlook stops synchronizing with Exchange 2010 after several hours of idle time, usually at around mid-day. Pressing Send/Receive button does not generate any errors, and does not download new emails in the mailbox queue. The condition is usually resolved by restarting Outlook, or by sending an email, after which, all emails are received in Inbox.

One of the computers have Windows 7 Enterprise, with Outlook 2007. Problem persists even after upgrading to Office 2010.

The other computer has Windows XP Professional, with Outlook 2007.

I checked for the usual timers under Mail Setup -> Send/Receive, and everything was in order.

I already mentioned a workaround above, but how do I resolve the condition permanently?
